No he would not approve. he wants you to give up your possessions and follow him.

8. Count well the cost before you start to follow me; it means the giving up of life, and all you have.
9. If you love father, mother, wife, or child, more than love the Christ, you cannot follow me.
10. If you follow wealth or honour more than you love the Christ, you cannot follow me.

I don't buy all that much, but I do give a LOT to the Church and related charities (St. Vincent DePaul Society) , local homeless shelter, and baby clothes to a crisis pregnancy center. I do this all year, but it really kicks in at Christmas. Why? Because the needy probably feel the worst at this time of the year given the abundance in our society.

That's not the true meaning of Christmas. The focus should be on Christ, not the gifts.

Let the christian have some fun. They tend to spread the joy to poor around this time of the year.
Its when the Christians can really feel good about themselves and the good deeds they do once a year.

ECCLES.7:1 = "A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth."
Proverbs 15:27 = "He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live."

Christmas has nothing to do with Christ; so he wouldn't even approve of gifts or of buying so much because that is coveting and greed.

I think He'd be happier if we took all the money that we spend on gifts for each other and gave it to the poor.
