Depends how you define "bomb." It made $26 million in the States and was #1 this weekend and took in another $55 million overseas.
I suspect the lack of larger numbers has more to do with the fact that cinematographically its just not a very good movie.

It's more likely that it wasn't really that interesting to begin with.
All of those negative talks about it (including the boycotts) are just promotions done in a similiar way like The Da Vinci Code's promotions.
Nicole Kidman definetly should be in a better movie. Though after the movie Birth, it might be a bit creepy for some to see her with little kids. Then again, there's also the To Die For movie.
Who knows maybe next she will play as a teacher in love with a teenage boy?
Now if they include giant robots, monsters, thousand years storyline, lots of pretty boys and girls, and so on, including a "Stand Tall and Shake the Heavens" tagline.
MAYBE it would be more interesting.
Then again, it's not like it was titled "The Golden Gear" or "The Outside Compass"..

According to Wikipedia, the budget for this movie was $180 million. So, by my calculation, the $26 million domestic gross + the $55 million overseas ($81 million total) equals only 45% of the budget. I would think that a studio is in business to MAKE money on its movies, so this performance would be deemed a bomb. And yes, it was boycotted by Catholic groups. Whether or not that affected it's box office numbers can't be determined.
On a side note, I did not see the movie, not because I am boycotting it, but because it just didn't look like it is entertaining.

The Catholic League is honestly certainly one of the extra vocal communities. some might say vehement. whilst maximum Catholics accept as true with the League's condemnation of Jack Chick comics and a manner of existence of rampant sexuality and violence, specific movements do no longer resonate besides with the Catholic community as an entire. i think of right here the subject became the profound use of magic and that a guy or woman's soul became taken care of very in any different case than what Catholicism (or certainly, any branch of Christian theology) holds it to be. This questioning is resembling the condemnations by way of specific Catholic bishops against the Harry Potter series. it incredibly is stupid, in my esteem, and pointless. yet as a private team, they're allowed to declare what they desire.

I read the book, which wasn't so great, and the film is chock full of that fake CGI they try to pass off these days as realistic, which I hate. And it got bad reviews. Only 43% on Rotten Tomatoes. But it was number 1 and did make 26.1 million. Who's complaining? I heard I Am Legend will be good and I'm saving my $7.00 for that one.

It was boycotted by a small group group, which didn't make that much of a difference . It wasn't a "bomb". They were expecting 30+ and it got 26. Some movies just don't do well as expected.

Well...hard to say. It is true many Christians take offense to the movie and many more to the books, but if I'm not mistaken the specific allusions to the Church were removed from the movie. Still, I think it must have been if it did not perform well.
