If you want to do something fancy, why not have high tea in one of the fancy hotels near Central Park? You should call in advance to make a reservation. But it's $35 per person and they bring you tea, finger sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, the works. The Plaza Hotel's Palm Court has a good one. Or you can take in an art gallery exhibit, many of which serve wine and cheese on the house. Or you can take in some free music. There are a ton of free holiday symphony performances, live jazz concerts, choir performances, etc., going on right now. Check out www.twi-ny.com. It gives you the low down on all the free or cheap happenings around the city. Just for example, the Guggenheim Museum is having a free brass ensemble and vocal ensemble holiday concert on 12/16 and 12/17.

Oh! Also, at the Park Avenue Cafe, if you arrive after 8:30 PM, you pay your age for your meal. (Minimum of 25.) I read a review online and the girl paid $33 total, including tax and tip, for a three-course meal.

Not knowing how old your friend is??? Maybe organise a surprise party...ask the guest to bring a plate of food, nibbles and drinks, a few party decorations, some good music, and all celebrate together.... have all the friends share the cost..there is nothing better than time with friends having fun!
