Does it divide into two souls?
Does that mean that the souls are also identical, not unique?

Or does a second soul get implanted?
If so, how does God determine which twin gets the original soul?

Twins have unique souls, just like they have 2 separate set of fingerprints. We may not understand how God does it, but I know that those 2 souls were planned long before the two identical twins were conceived

The ancient Hebrews believed the soul entered the body when the baby was halfway out of the mother. This means identical twins or natural miscarriages (20% of all pregnancies) are consistent with the idea of a soul. Other ancient people believed the soul entered the body with the first breath. This relationship between breathing and souls accounts for superstitions like covering your mouth when you yawn (so your soul doesn't escape) or saying "Bless You" when someone sneezes (to make sure your soul isn't ejected when you sneeze). By this second definition, twins and miscarriages don't cause a conflict with soul. The idea that there is some sort of religious reason to believe life begins at conception is a very recent one. It was developed to prevent women from choosing to have an abortion. I find it interesting because abortions were performed in biblical times, but they are not prohibited by the bible. Torg

The soul does not enter at the moment of conception. There are no baby spirits and no babies in heaven, all are adult souls. The soul can enter in at anytime before the birth or right at birth. They have a right to enter or change their plans to come to earth at that time for various reasons, some may decide that the life they chose may not be the right life that would further their soul's progression. This is reason for why some babies are born dead. They also have up to a year to change their minds, soul mind, not human mind. Ever wonder about crib deaths, not all are caused by this reason, but some are. That is why doctors cannot find a cause of crib death, they now suggest for baby to sleep on their backs.
I have an identical twin sister, we are totally different, except for looks. Total different personalities, interest and mannerisms. We were triplets and mother lost one triplet at six weeks and carried us to term. This is very very rare according to Physicians. There are no accidents in life. Nothing happens by chance. I will only know why this soul decided not to incarnate at that time until I cross over. There are a lot of times I wish I had stayed home. I don't know how the world could handle 3 of us.

I know lots of sets of twins and trust me when I say they both get original sin.

And they both get their own unique soul.

Why couldn't God have had two individual souls existing in the zygote before it split?

He would certainly know that it was going to split so whats to stop the all powerful creator of the universe putting two souls in the one cell?

Its not as complicated a question as you were hoping now is it?

EDIT>>

As for the chimeric comment above, again God would know what was going to happen so would have only created the one soul... come on people give us something that's actually difficult to answer...

Better yet, what happens when someone is chimeric? That is, when one fetus absorb their identical twin so that they cells the cells of two organisms in them? Do they then have two souls?

It's amazing how far one can push the absurdity of the concept of a soul, especially one that magically implants itself at conception...
