For some guys it means that he sees you as the kind of girl he would like to date... cute is good because a guy sees you as innocent and assumes that if he dated you that you wouldn't be running around hooking up with other guys... "cute" girls are often the best ones to date...

when a guy says it, i take it as respectful. "sexy" and "hot" are over used. he probably thinks that you're a really nice girl with some beauty to you. i'd take it as a compliment.
