And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.

Why is God going to sent an angel down to slay me, cause I get drunk? This is who your worship. I'm trying not to be rude, but this offends me that you live by a book of a God that plans on having me killed for having a little fun in life.

"Umm--he's saying that the destroying angel (Satan) will PASS BY.

Are you drunk now? If so, go to bed and sleep it off, you'll be better in the morning."

So why would Satan pass by the "children of Isreal?" Satan fans of God's chosen people now?

I'm high, not drunk, and also not borderline retarded.

DUI, serosis of the liver, other health problems. God works by natural means. Almost everything in the Word of Wisdom has been proven since it was received in 1833. Some points such as the consumption of some amounts of wine are still debated, but overall most people know the benefits of following similar health habits.

By the way, I'm sorry you must use alcohol to have fun. I enjoy my life quite a bit without it.

Umm--he's saying that the destroying angel (Satan) will PASS BY if you follow the word of wisdom to keep yourself healthy.

Are you drunk now? If so, go to bed and sleep it off, you'll be better in the morning.

Edit--Don't forget to put a bucket next to your bed--and don't miss

Yeah, the destroying angel passed by the children of Isreal to help them elude the Egyptians, who held them captive. Read the story. I think they made a couple of movies, too--even some cartoons.

You have been given some wonderful answers so far... I just wanted to point out that when speaking "for" the Lord, and it is usually only the prophet since he is the one who receives all revelation for the church as a whole, he may say "And the Lord said" or "Thus saith the Lord:" that usually becomes doctrine. I have also heard a prophet say he has prayed about "_____" and received an answer and this is it... like where to build a temple or something like that. Those who hold the Priesthood have the authority to 'act' in God's name, really the only one who has the authority to 'speak' for God is the Prophet. God said in the scriptures that He would reveal nothing except through His prophet. Make sense?

This passage of scripture is stating that by staying healthy through observing the "Word of Wisdom" you can avoid situations that might place you in jeopardy of being ensnared by Satan. It means that by observing said Word of Wisdom your intellect will stay keen and sharp and thus avoid temptations. The term "destroy" should not necessarily be taken in the direct form of being killed off, but rather your soul and eternal progress would be "destroyed" by becoming entrapped with Satan's snares.

The "little fun in life" you refer to is precisely what leads to a lot of social ills, including deaths from drunk driving, broken marriages and homes, loss of jobs, loss of self respect, personal health issues like cirrhosis of the liver, etc. One or two drinks will not bring that about in such simple ways; however, every drunk or skid row bum started out with a drink or two.

Sorry it sound harsh to you, but the verse really meant for LDS members.

1 A Word OF Wisdom, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion—

Since you're not even a believer, why are you offended by it?
Offended by something you do not believe in? Sound illogical doesn't it?

Honestly speaking, you don't need God to kill you at all, you are doing a great job killing your self with alcohol.

The Mormons do not believe that. My daughter is Mormon and I once asked her about what was their belief in the theory of hell. They believe that all religions will go to some kingdom, perhaps even the lowest. They teach there are different levels of where people go. They teach that they go to the Celestial Kingdom, which is the highest. They do believe that the devil is the only entity that will go to hell. I do not know what they believe hell consist of, like outer darkness or banishment from Gods presence eternally.

As I read it, it says that if you obey those "words of wisdom" you have a promise that the destroying angel will pass by you. I did not read anywhere what would happen if you didn't live it. It doesn't say that if you drink or smoke that the destroying angel will burn down your house or anything.

Usually my atheists fellows, show a tad bit more smarts, than to attack a single religion in this fashion.
If you are just trolling, and trying to be funny? You missed your mark.
If you really feel the need to get drunk, go ahead, since you are not Mormon anyway, I am sure that no one will care, one way or the other.

Too many questions.
However, I suppose if my grandfather's brother had not been drunk and on his way to another bar, he wouldn't have been run over and killed by another drunk driver. It just means that your life will be more likely to be prolonged if you avoid certain situations, in my opinion.

Mitt Romney's cousin wrote a magazine article that talked a little about it....

But I wouldn't get too offended, you don't seem to be inclined to let other people's faith cause you to lose sleep...mormons let you do your thing...they just happen to have a higher moral standard than you.
