and I think I wasted my money.
The hype around this movie was an example of religious insecurity that was as typical as Nicole Kidman's dry and lifeless performance. The story was fair (at best) and more than a little weird. The "anti-religious" message behind the movie that attracted sooooo much attention, was so over the top that only an IDIOT would think ill of their religion after seeing this movie.
My take on this was don't go see the movie- it was a piece of s#!t.
Anyone else feel the same way after seeing this?

I just took a break from watching it to jump on Yahoo for a bit ( I am watching it in the comfort of my bedroom, no $8 popcorn or loudmouths to listen to) I have found it okay so far but certainly nothing worth all the hype.
Edit, I just finished watching it and yeah it pretty much sucked, not many positives I could even come up with.

I read that it was a well filmed movie. (The people that had the problems with it did not have problems with this movie per se but apparently they sequels plan to get more and more into religious conspiracy and anti religious. so I have heard). I never liked Nicole Kidman, I always thought she was a bad actress and the only reason she was famous was Tom Cruise. I heard the kid was a really good actress though. The polar bear fight scene was really good, and that it was over all worth the money (this is from the review article on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Film and Broadcasting office)
(BTW: You mention Lord of the Rings you know that whole story was based on Catholic Catechism. It started as bedtime stories to teach his Children their Catechism and Church history until he eventually began writing them down. Perhaps that is why you did not like, if you are looking for antireligious messages).

I thought the movie was good and the controversy overblown. The movie isn't anti-religious. It's message is that kids should think for themselves. A message which seems to strike fear into the heart of the church for some reason. And I didn't care much for the Lord of the rings either.

I heard the movie had alot of visual effects that would satisfy the movie-goer that likes that kind of thing. I heard it compared to Narnia, just with more violence.
I also heard that the movie is very watered down as far as the anti-Catholic angle goes. From what I see, it has to do with people being born with an animal companion. And that they send the child off to have the animal removed from the human....a very symbolic comparison of the church, I guess.
But I haven't seen the movie, but I intend to. The book is probably what you should read.
Toadaly. Are you for real? There are 3 books, this was about the first. Duh.

I haven't been to see the movie yet. I plan to take the kids this weekend because they are dying to see it.
I think it is probably hyped up to be more anti-Christian than it is because controversy sells. I don't see a reason to be concerned with the message it may give my kids.
I fully expect it to be a piece of crap but I sort of have to see it, considering the fact that my kids are BEGGING me to take them. Oh well.

The movie was ok, but not great. The ending was TOO open ended with plans for an obvious sequel - it had no closure. I HATE movies like that that are not self contained. If I had known it, I would not have gone to see it.

If you disliked Narnia as well, it may be that fantasy films of this ilk are not your cup of tea.
I just have no interest at all in seeing it

I liked it. Mainly because seeing two armoured polar bears fight to the death is nothing short of orgasmic.
