I use the KJV Open Bible and NKJV Open Bible. But I want a different version that is as good as the Open Bible. Not by one editor, but by various editors.

For study, you cannot beat the NASB. The verb-tenses are the closest you can get to the original Hebrew and Greek without sounding forced or stilted. It's a good study Bible and an easy read...sounds natural in modern English without the grievous errors of the NIV.

Try Christian Book Distributors (1-800-Christian) or the website http://www.christianbook.com for some ideas, if your local bookstore doesn't have what you need. I'm not sure which translations are in the Open Bible format or editions, but if your Open Bible is anything like mine from 1975, you do have a LOT of good study helps! (I sent that one off to the World Home Bible League several years ago to help pastors in foreign lands.)

The King James and New KJV are good, I personally use my New American Standard version, and I know people who like the NIV. Basically, and not to contradict the other folks on this post, get the one that speaks clearest to you. God wants His message to be clear and understandable above all else.

Why not try some of the parallel versions?

Edit - to tarkill68 - Why do you want a Bible that mistranslates the Hebrew word for "morning star"? That's all the word means. If you don't believe me, look it up in Genesius' Hebrew Lexicon. Just because a Bible version disagrees with the KJV doesn't mean that it's wrong. Here's a shocker for you. Maybe the KJV is the one that's wrong.

Go to any Christian book store and check out the versions they have there. They will be carrying practically every version there is and if you want advice you ask a store clerk to help you.

I recommend very highly the New English Translation. You can check it out at bible.org.

It is quite good, very readable and includes thousands of translation notes which can explain some of the difficulties that are discussed here on R&S.

It's out of print, but try the Discovery Bible. It shows the verb tense of the original Greek for the New Testament.

There is another one that maintains the original Hebrew names called Complete Jewish Bible.

Comparison shop by looking up verses in each at Bible Gateway.
