every morning, i eat 2 cups of gruel and have a warm cup of tea. sometimes, if the meat man has been by, then i am allowed to have a slice of bacon or a piece of sausage, but thats only if the meat man has been by, and ONLY if all of the fireplaces have been cleaned out before i get to my breakfast, which means that i have to wake up 3 hours earlier in order to have any chance of a slice of bacon or a piece of sausage. if i want to get bacon or sausage, i have to be EXTREMELY quiet as i enter the bedrooms of the people that live here in bustlewaite manor. one morning, i woke up the matriarch of this house, and even tho it was freezing cold with FURY outside, and getting ready for a blizzard to come, she made me remove all of my clothes, and march through the entire house nude, outside to the whipping post. i was bleeding and blistered and bruised so bad by the time she was done, and then she took me to the kitchen, made me get in a wash tub, and poured EXTREMELY hot and salty water all over me. i screamed in agony, but she shushed me, and told me that this was going to make my wounds heal quicker. she helped me out of the wash tub, and patted me dry, very gently. she put a plain grey gown on me, and told me to go up to my room. "lie in your bed all day, and think about what you did," she said. "tomorrow i will expect for you to be much quieter, if you enter my room at that hour. you will receive no meals today. stay in your room and think about your atrocious behavior all day long. get going." I nodded, and obeyed. being a child, at that time, i had no toys or books to keep me occupied in that house, because I had no time for toys or books. i was constantly working, but that day seemed like the longest day of my life! laying in my bed, and not doing anything, but watching the clock's hours tick on by. i must confess, i did not think about ONLY "my atrocious behaviour" but i thought about my missing mother, my dead father, my little sister whom i had not seen or heard from in a year, and who was a "worker" at another Home.

If you are in a savoury mood:
Scrambled eggs with a little sprinkling of chives, shortcut bacon, well-cooked but not burnt, cherry tomatoes with salt and cracked black peppercorns, and a fresh baked knot roll with sesame seeds, use real butter on it, spread generously.

If, however, you are in a sweet mood:
A short stack of crepes with whipped butter, maple syrup and fresh strawberries dusted with castor sugar.

Enjoy!
