I was raised Catholic, but I am unsure if I want to have my son christened into a specific religion. However, I DO want him dedicated. Just curious how go about doing that...I was told that you can write a "dedication letter" and in front of friends and family announce that you are dedicating your child. Then a notary of the public signs and seals the document and that's that. It all sounds so impersonal though. Any advice?

When my oldest had his dedication ceremony, his mother and I brought him forward to the front of the church. (Edit: he was only a few weeks old at the time. I was in the military at that time and we had to get approved leave to go back home.)

The pastor gave a message to us, to be sure to raise him according to the Bible. Then he had a prayer for the three of us. There may have been more to it but I don't recall--it was a very emotional time for us!

By all means, ask your pastor, as he will probably have a format or something to follow. I doubt you live near me, but now that I'm a pastor, I would be happy to help plan out a service that would best meet your needs and expectations. May God bless you and your son during this time, and every day too!

What is a "dedication ceremony"? You mean baptism? Of course there's a ritual.
