Well...things there are many ways to tell and these all depend on the guy really - as in shy or not
Ways to tell include:
Does he stare at you?
If so then when you catch him, does he turn away and pretend it didn't happen?
Does he treat you differently than other girls?
When you talk to him does he always try and turn the conversation about you?
Has he mentioned a hypothetical situation where you two are going out?
A really good way to tell is by standing in his personal space and if he moves away - bad sign, if he stays close to you - good sign
Things like him trying to make as much physical contact as possible are signs too.
Unfortunately the best/full proof way of finding out is to ask him straight out though! Maybe get a friend to do it

Guys don't have girl "friends". If he likes you, he likes you. Period.
