No, you don't baste it if you're using a cooking bag. But, you need to add 3 to 4 cups of water or other liquid to the bag before you close it. The liquid used in the bag could consist of fruit juice or wine, or a carbonated beverage, such as cola.

You can do it in the oven. All I do is line a dish with foil, pour a beer over the ham, cover the ham with foil, and cook for however long the ham package directs me too. I don't think I have ever seen a ham that didn't have instructions on it. BTW, you can't taste the beer and it makes it VERY MOIST!! Just remember to baste it every 20 minutes or so. P.S. Basting is when you take a baster (little squirter thing) and suck up some of the juices that are in the pan that the ham is cooking in and then squeeze it empty all over the ham. Do this a few times every 20-25 minutes! GOOD LUCK!

A cured ham is already cooked, but its best to completely heat it to an internal temperature of 160 degrees.
A 12 pound bone-in ham takes about 4.5 to 5 hours to be thoroughly cooked in a 350 degree oven. Place the ham in a roasting pan, and press whole cloves into the top at 1 to 2 inch intervals. Pack the top of the ham with a layer of brown sugar. Pour water into the bottom of the pan until it's 1 inch deep. Bake, tightly covered at 350 degrees 4.5 to 5 hours or until the internal temperature of the ham (thermometer not touching the bone) has reached at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the ham from the oven and let it sit about 20 minutes before carving.

There are two kinds of "ham" that you can cook.
One is an actually uncooked ham that you need to cook.
The other is a pre-cooked ham, which is usually pretty good, often the spiral-sliced, and what it really needs to be done is heated, as opposed to cook.
I'm guessing that's what you're talking about. Yes, an oven is great. Time ranges from 1 hour to 4 hours, depending on the size of the ham. I have found that the smaller hams dry out, the bigger ones do better, and you can pick off them for days.
If you honestly are trying to do a ham from scratch, and don't normally cook, I wouldn't encourage it. Not that you're not probably capable, but it's tricky enough as it is. I've been cooking for decades, and although ham is not my specialty, I don't find as good results as the spiral-sliced hams that are pre-cooked.

The easiest way to cook a ham is to put it in an oven bag that is usually used for a turkey, and then into a pan without a lid.
The oven bag comes in a box with directions on it. Follow those directions for cooking. If you want to put dark brown sugar and/or a glaze on the ham before closing the bag, it will add to the flavor. YUM!
If you want a real experience, put the ham that is in the oven bag in the microwave oven, and cook in half the time, following the directions on your microwave or on the box. Don't forget to slit the bag, though, or it will explode!

The instructions are on all fresh hams and canned hams as well. Yes, you can cook a ham of any kind in an oven with no problems. Just follow the directions.

:) I bake all my hams in the oven. Get a turkey roasting pan and pop it in. Cover the ham with pineapple and brown sugar and baste it with the pineapple juice. Let it just cook, until done. If it looks a little dry cover it with a tent of aluminum foil. Throw some butter into the drippings mix it all well and serve that up as a sauce.

You can cook Ham in the oven and it should be. Just put the ham in a pan and I usually put a baste in the pan to help keep it moist, every half hour I go in an baste the ham to keep the juices flowing. You can also put the ham in one of those basting bags that traps in the moisture.
