I think what you're talking about is a gasp (inhalation, by the way), and it's a pretty common reaction to the unexpected.

I hardly ever hold my breath when something is falling to the floor. Lets see, it would be "Aigh, aigheee, yyiii" all the while attempting to catch it with hands, knees, toes or a kitchen spatula I am holding to break its fall and stop it from breaking.
From experience, I know that fast reflexes can mitigate the damage. However, lets say something is falling down and I am too far away to actively participate in catching or saving the object, my response would be a grimace and shutting my eyes, cringing at the anticipated crash and sounds of glass breaking.

This is what we call an involuntary action. We do the same thing when we first see danger, see something really awesome or hear a sudden loud noise, etc.
I hope this helps. Just do not hold your breath too long. Take a deep breath and let it out as soon after as you can. You will feel better and get more oxygen.

Because we hope against hope that it doesn't spill, break or stain.
Maybe we don't want to get yelled at by a parent.
Or perhaps we like the object falling and know that the outcome will not be so good.
Or, we are embarrassed that we might be clumsy.
I think it would be funny to see our expressions at that moment!

I know what you mean but isn't a reaction of drawing in a breath as if to say "Oh!" ? It doesn't appear to be a holding of the breath as much as it is a surprise for dropping something, especially if the item is fragile.

Great question! I'd assume it'd be something of a panic mode like what cats do when they are slinking and you make a noise and they freeze.
I hope you get a better answer than mine...

seriously why do we do that? i never thought about that untill now...strange!!!
maybe its like our body is reacting slow and so it doesn't know what to do and it panics so it makes us hold our breath.
like " no!!!!! we droped it ...let me make this person hold their breath so that they can know never to drop things again" lol i don't know...i tried to be funny but ...didn't work lol

What I don't, do that.... and people probably do it because they hope that the object doesn't break
