When you are out at a restaurant, are you not supposed to tip on the wine. I had a nice meal with friends this evening and we had three bottles of wine which cost a total of $150. When we were paying the bill, one of the guys insisted that we need not tip for the wine just on the food. Our total bill was over $700 and we gave a $140 tip, was this enough. should we not have tipped on the wine?

I've worked in four star restaurants, and you said the "total" bill was $700, I'm going to presume that includes the wine, and yes you tip the wine, the standard tip for decent service and food, including the wine, is 15% to 20%. a 15% tip would've been $105, 20% would've been $140, so you tipped pretty good, if I was your server, I'd be happy to have served you, and look forward for your return.

Wow! You tipped very nicely 20 % that was more than enough. Concerning the wine, is up to you, see you tip because of the service, and the wine is already overpriced! you also have to discount the tax. Per say, The total Was $700.00 and the tax was $ 50.00 you only tip 15% of $650.00 Also, if you were more than 8 people, the tip is usually included in the bill.

You absolutely should tip on wine. In some restaurants, if there is a wine steward, there is even a SEPARATE tip on wine.

All I can say is that it is because of situations like this that restaurants add the gratuity for large parties. If you can't afford the tip, eat at home!
