Senator McCarthy from Wisconsis was a demogogue who terrorized Washington by claiming that there were Communists everywhere in the Government. Most of his claims were without merit. In this hearing, he was investigating the promotion of an officer who he claimed was a Communist. It was the earliest of his hearings that were televised, and the Army Attorney, Joe Walsh made him look like a idiot, especially when McCarthy couldn't make headway based in fact, and accused one of Walsh's associates of being a Communist.
Soon after, the Senate censured McCarthy. He died a few years later of alcholism.

While he was holding his hearings, McCarthy became the darling of the right-wing conservatives and churches of the day. Their reputations and political clout were seriously damaged for a time.

Senator McCarthy was a hero. He has been demonized but new information has emerged proving that he was right all along. The Soviet Union has had spies in the US Government all throughout the Cold War.
