Im thinking about going to school to become a RN i already have my CNA i got it a few years ago and honestly i didnt like being a CNA cause i was working at a nursing home was not my thing. (i didnt like how they treated the elderly) I made good grades when i was going to classes for CNA. My question is math has always been a very weak subject for me so will that be a issue when going for RN? Im willing to study hard and put the time into becoming a RN im just kinda uneasy about getting into it if math will be a big part of it. Thanks

Most of nursing math is dividing or multiplying. Such as the patient needs 40mg of a medication, but you only have 20mg tablets, how many tablets do you give? answer: 2 tabs. Yes, we do some figuring of IV drip rates, but there is honestly only 2-3 formulas we use a lot and once you know them you are good to go!! We do have to know how to change pounds to kilograms to figure some med dosages. It's easy: the pounds divided by 2.2 equals the kilograms!! (150/2.2=68.18). If you work in a hospital you will most likely have a pharmacist on staff that will help you with your math if you need it. I love math, but my friend hates it and she is also a really good nurse!!! You can do it, just get a Math for Nurses book and study some!!

In the "olden days" we used to have to calculate frequently on the units, but the technology does a lot of that for you. Everyone has a calculator, the IVs are usually on pumps that control the rates so drip rates are really not an issue often. You learn to do them in school, but don't use them very often once you are at the hospital.

However, if you happen to go into the military, or do any mission work in a third world country, you will need those old skills, so they are good to know. I got very used to having all my IVs and IV meds on pumps, and then found myself in a plywood OR in Honduras. You really need the basic skills then. Learn the math, and don't expect to rely on the pharmacist, they may not be there when you need those calculations. I had one day here in the US during a coronary bypass procedure, when the power lines were knocked down by a truck during a wreck, and almost immediately the hospital's tranformers were struck by lightening, leaving the OR without any power at all. Again, you are back to doing those calculations and doing the basic skills.

Math is not the most important task, and the math for most nursing tasks is pretty straight forward, but learn it.

Math is huge as you will need to do calculations for pharmacology. Moreover, chemistry is a necessary prerequisite any nursing program. Freshman chem is all about math. Its not calculus, but is not arithmatic, either.

If you are willing to put the time in and apply yourself, you should do fine.
