I'm new to this filing-on-my-own thing, and I just realized, after going through my file cabinets, that I have some money coming back to me from Uncle Sam. However, when I file this, do I need to use a form that says 2007, or should I use one that says 2006? The money was earned in 2006, so I wasn't sure how the tax years ran. Also, since I am married but will not be filing jointly, and made under 50K, what form should I use? This grown-up stuff is hard. :(

The returns for income earned in 2006 would be filed as a 2007 return. It is not really wise to file Married Filing Seperately because you lose many benefits. Either way the form would be the 1040 or 1040A depending on if you were itemizing or not.

If the earnings were in 2006, you are late in filing. You must use the 2006 forms and instructions.

If it was income earned in 2006 you would file the 1040 2006 form...http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040--2006.pdf,

and you would want to use the 2006 tax table as well...http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040tt--2006.pdf

As long as you don't have any special circumstances you would just file a plain 1040 form...but if you have any property or special deductions you may want to consider efiling so it can tell you exactly what forms you need to file.

Also, if you were not married in 2006 you would file as single...it is what your status was as of 12/31/2006 not what your status is now.

If you were married you should file as joint, not married filing separate...you pay a lot more taxes if you file separatly.

You need to file the 2006 form 1040. If your husband itemized you need to also it is very complicated when you file married filing separately so it may end up costing you more than you think in taxes. Not filing jointly is usually only done when your spouse is cheating on their taxes or if you can't find them to file jointly.

You'll need 2006 tax forms- you can download them at irs.gov

Were you married at the end of 2006? If you weren't, even if you are now, you don't have to file as married filing separately.

Use form 1040A.
