1. Lower your dependence on your local utility, by permitting you to have power during blackouts, storms, and other disasters.
2. When your local utility is functioning well, allows you to go of grid temporarily or full-time depending on the total installed power you got.
3. Helps the community and the nation by easing the demand of total power and U.S. dependence on fossil fuels.
4. When combined with wind and/or hydro, as well as passive solar heating, it can provide a total solution for electricity without using any local utility power at all.
With the prices dropping as manufacturing technology improves, the choice of installation becomes more attractive. Prices now are as low as $3 per watt of solar panel (plus installation) http://www.ecobusinesslinks.com/solar_panels.htm
I have used and own solar panels and think they're great!

There are both personal and community benefits, if and only if you can afford them and the local jurisdiction allows them.
Personal benefits would include lower utility bills and a good feeling that you are using energy that is not fueled by nuclear or coal.
Community benefits include being an example to others that solar might be a good thing as well as lowering the burden on the local power grid and potentially, if enough people had solar panels, lowering the cost of manufactured energy all together.

In theory it would conserve everything from water to wood. In reality the costs to build and maintain outweigh any benefits.
