Every shift on a unit should have a charge nurse, and that RN should make evaluations of the people working on their unit. They can then have a secondary evaluation by a supervisor above the charge nurse, either the unit head nurse or the shift nursing supervisor. In my opinion (and you can take it for what it is worth) the DON should only evaluate the nursing management staff. If the DON evaluates all the nurses it takes any authority and control out of the hands of the shift supervisors.

Very puzzling question, this one. there are cases while a guy or woman must be allowed to die in peace and not be placed via the indignity of tried resuscitation and others while all stops must be pulled out to resuscitate. asserting that an experienced nurse can take that selection motives some concern to me. what's an experienced nurse? A nurse who has 2 many years journey, might on no account have been in contact in resuscitation. A nurse might have a level, yet no existence journey.

Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's the staff nurses who work with the new people and know truely what they're like. Many times the DON barely sees the nurses working the floor!! I like peer evaluation!!!!!!!!!

The only way the DOC knows anything is through the staff nurses. So yes they do rely on them.

Absolutely! We're the ones that have to work with them...I really like "working interviews" so we get to see their work ethic and speed before we hire them on!
