Here is a partial list of wars that did NOT start over religion, though religion may have played a role. They started over politics, land, wealth, power, slavery, etc.

I only know my own country's history so won't try to answer for other countries. I believe you are thinking of the wars in the Middle East, which are certainly tragic, but hardly account for most wars.

My personal opinion is that most wars do not actually start over religion, they start over greed. Greed for land, greed for power, greed for money. Religion is sometimes used as an excuse, so the people starting the war don't have to admit to being just plain greedy, if they call it a Holy War, then they can justify it to themselves.
