I am a Master Addictions Counselor and Licensed Addiction Counselor I've been in the field working with teens that smoke weed for over 17 years. Yes at 16 you might be "successful" but the problem with weed is that it causes a slow steady decline in ones motivation, desire to do well and mental state. At 16 you have only begun to experience the marijuana and if you continue you will no doubt start to see other problems arise in your life. Also sometimes the most intelligent and creative people get addicted to drugs. I have several friends that smoked weed with me at 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 etc. the problem now is that they are "Pot Heads" and it is affecting their lives, one is so lazy he just stays home and watches TV and rarely goes out with us any more. If he does go out he is high as hell and stupid. He can't follow conversation and forgets things like plans, or conversations that we just had; he is also always late and smells like weed. My other friend who "controlled" his use got caught puffin in the bathroom at work and lost his job (he was an accountant for a major investment firm he lost his job and his wife got sick of him not being able to find a new job so she divorced him. He said he feels so stupid that he risked everything for some weed. He is now clean and sober for 22 months and is again employed and just told me last night he is so happy he quit. I hate to say it but you are buying into the myth that "It won't become a problem". Just give it time weed is very patient and will wait years to bring you down. One other thing that worries me is that if you get hurt at work or you get in a car accident even if you weren't high and the blood work comes back positive for THC the insurance companies can refuse to pay your workers comp claim or to fix your car and hospital bills. Lastly many jobs do test for marijuana and the reasons they do is because people that smoke weed are sick more, miss more work, are less likely to move up in a company they have more absences than people that don't smoke weed. I also want to tell you every junkie, addict and crack head I have worked with over the past 17 years started with marijuana or alcohol and cigarettes and every one of us said, "It wont happen to me I can handle it" Oh by the way I am clean and sober 19 years and I have lived life both ways and being drug free is far superior than being a drug user. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

RE:
Can a kid thats 16 (me) smoke weed and still lead a successful life?
I make good grades, I keep my priorities straight, and I am more mature than most of my peers yet I am looked down upon for smoking weed. I dont quite understand why it is stereo-typed that anyone that smokes weed is a failure at life. Please give honest feedback.

I'm not going to tell you if you should or should not starts....although with your brain still developing at your age, starting now is stupid, IMHO. I have been running (as the owner) the most successful comic book store in our region of the United States for over 10 years and have smoked pot on a daily basis since I was 18 (I''m 43 now) and before that was the regional manager of a major cell phone and telephony company, my area covered three states and everyone who worked in that area ultimately answered to me.. So yes, you can be successful and smoke weed. I do believe, however that I am the exception and not the rule.

George your seriously dumb.
The police cant do anything for you saying you smoke weed. I could say I smoked an ounce of bud this week all I want, they cant do anything about it. The only time they can get you for anything is if you have it in possesion, or like a DUI or some sort.
With that aside,
I know many successful people in life that own many businesses and are multi-millionairs that smoke weed. As long as your not letting it affect your grade or life, use it the same way as alcohol in a way.

ok first off, most people don't understand weed is MUCH safer than alcohol but alcohol is somehow socially accepted. Thousands and thousands of people die from alcohol poisoning every year and with weed it is impossible to overdose.
ok now to the point. If you want to be successful you are going to have to quit that stuff. You don't want to be dependent on a drug your entire life. All that stuff is going to do for you is make you slow down in life. You need to let it go. Plus the long term effects are not pleasant. Just think about the power you can have if you're not always dependent on a drug. You are free.

Here's something to try stop for 6 months if you have a hard time your addicted and should stop anyway if not your not missing out on much any way.
I did drugs for a long time and it closed allot of doors for me I have lost allot of good friends. It took me four years to straighten my life out after I quit I will probably never be as successful as i could have been
Just take into account you are responsible for your actions even at your age you can really **** your life up even if you don't all you have gained is being high

Well you have the freedom to make a choice. If it is your choice to smoke weed, then there is honestly nothing wrong with you in my opinion. It is a drug that's not healthy, and puts you in the wrong state of mind, but so does alcohol. Only difference with alcohol and weed, is that weed is an illegal drug that is tested in most successful jobs, so you would have to quit smoking it in order to get that job. Good luck with your future, if I was you, I would quit weed as soon as you become truly prepared to face the real world.

most of the time people who smoke weed turn into real losers later in life, but there are always a couple that are able to bypass this and keep a successful life... just to make sure that you lead a good life, i would suggest quitting, as it makes your life dull.

Its frowned upon because people let a substance like marijuana change them. They turn into the stereotype because its whats there. You on the other hand dont let it control you. You are still successful because its just something you do for fun. My friends dad is a stoner and he pulls in well over 100k a year. I smoke on occasion and I am 18 working a job in my actual skilled career of graphics making 9 an hour full time.
