Tithing is a practice picked up from Jewish tradition. The tribe of Levi, one of the tribes of Israel, served as the priests of the land. They had no other job, so they had no income. The other tribes were thus required to give one of their animals to the Levites to support them. Its in Deuteronomy 18.
"The priests, who are Levites - indeed, the whole tribe of Levi - are to have no allotment or inheritance with Israel. They shall live on the OFFERINGS made to the Lord by fire, for that is their inheritance. They shall have no inheritance among their brothers; the Lord is their inheritance, as he promised them.
This is the share due of the priests from the people who sacrifice a bull or a sheep: the shoulder, the jowls and the inner parts. You are to give them the firstfruits of your grain, new wine and oil, and the first wool from the shearing of your sheep, for the Lord your God has chosen them and their descendants out of all your tribes to stand and minister in the Lord's name always.
Numbers, particularly the 18th chapter, talks of the Levites and tithes.
By "receive no inheritance" it talks about the land. Each tribe got a certain portion of land in Israel, except the Levites. The temple was the Levites area, not any particular region.
Tithes are not really mandatory under Christianity because modern ministers are not the same as the Levites. However since the government does not pay the minister's salary, the congregation (i.e. church) does. If a pastor has a small church they may have to take a second job to make a living. Pastors of huge churches could become very wealthy.
Give whatever you want. I personally don't go to church. Paying ministers a lot though will not make you a good person. Keep away from sin and you will please God more than any tithe will.

Why does tithing have to be money? Can't tithing be giving to others without the exchange of currency? I had a client who's a pastor. His church is a huge one on top of a hill adorned with a steeple as big as a Nasa rocket! His home is located in a posh gated community, complete with golf course and country club. His congregation, who are still some of my clients seem to spend every free moment doing work for the church. And they have to pay a tithe and it's a phenominal amount. Now.... does that paint a clear enough picture? I believe that God wants us to help those in need whenever you can. Mow an elderly person's lawn. Open doors, smile, feed a stray hungry animal, adopt, volunteer anywhere you're needed, give a homeless person a blanket....the list is endless. You can be out just shopping and find a dozen things to help out another that only take a moment.....That's how you please God...

I must ask you whether you are truly interested in what Scripture says, or what many people assume to be true.
Tithing was an old covenant requirement. It was never a new covenant requirement.
Also, tithes were assessed from the increase of one's produce and / or livestock. Tithes were never assessed of people's wages. Those who worked for wages under the old covenant did not tithe.
So the question becomes, why do churches teach tithing on wages, contrary to Scripture, and contrary to the new covenant?
Wolves.
Scripture warns us of deceptions and deceivers. Neither is easy to spot unless one is well versed in Scripture.
So you either believe the Bible, or churches that teach tithing which serves them, and is to the detriment of their members.
You may well say they are entitled to money to run their church and pay their ministry, which is true, but they have no right to invoke tithing as a means of accomplishing this. Christians are to give freely, without compulsion.

first of all, God bless you for caring about the tithe!
now, the Bible says we`re to give a first fruits offering of ALL our income or gain. that includes wages from a job, OR ANY other gain, such as allowances or gifts, or rewards for chores, or ANY OTHER gain we receive!
that probably covers whatever you were thinking about tithing on, huh?
as far as when to tithe, if you get a weekly allowance and go to church every Sunday, you should tithe every Sunday. or as often as you receive gain, you should tithe on it the very next opportunity you have to do so!
if you receive some gain on monday, be sure to set aside the FIRST 10% for your tithe till you have opportunity to give it at church. That`s why it`s called the FIRST FRUIT offering!
we give that first BEFORE we do anything else with that gain! Don`t spend any of the gain on anything else and hope that on Sunday you`ll still have 10% left, because 9 times out of 10, it will be gone! If you have a Bible handy, read malachi chapter 3 verses 10-12!
And again, may the Lord richly bless you for having the desire to please Him with your obedience with your tithe!
P .S. these are awesome questions that many adults should be asking themselves, so don`t ever be afraid or embarassed to ask a question. The Bible says "You have not because you ASK not" so keep asking!!!!!!!!!

You give when you can. By all means don't give to the point that you can't feed yourself. There are other ways to give than just money. One way is to STUDY our Father's Word and be a seed planter and positive influence on those around you. In terms of actual tithing money. Tithe where you are spiritually fed. Many people I think tithe just to make a show of it or to say "look how good I am." Or over worry about what others think. What you should be concerned over is what God thinks about how you are doing and if you are pleasing to Him. He knows your heart and mind. He made you. Talk to Him- tithing is between you and God and no one else.

Tithing is an act of obedience to God- the last book of the Old Testament (Malachi 3) addresses this.
However, not having a job, is ok, and not the real issue- God doesnt need anything from us- It is just that God expects us to be good stewards of what He gives us- Tithing is more than just the money- giving or your time and talents are important too.

The tithe is designed to bring believers into a place of obedience and trust with God...it's tough for people to part with money, so when we give with joy, it gladdens the Lord's heart AND just happens to help your local church.
The interesting and wonderful thing about tithing is that even though you are giving money away, you will never go without the things you need. The Lord doesn't need your money, just your trust. Trust Him to provide for you when you get any money by giving Him back 10%. You'll be stunned at what it does for your relationship with God. Pray about it and do what the Lord lays on your heart.

For members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints, a 10% tithe is required. All members are expected to pay a full tithe - regardless of their income. There are many members in poor countries that are faithful tithe payers, and the Lord always preserves them. There have been many stories of people in such conditions where they could choose either to starve, or to spend their tithing money. They chose to pay their tithe, and were abundantly blessed. Members that do not pay a full tithe are not able to attain a temple recommend.
I am not aware of any other Christian faiths that require a 10% tithe.

there is no longer anything such as tithe. however if you you read the new testament closely you will come up with a combination that will total 22%. God expects you to give as you can and will do cheerfully. also if the 98% of church goers who dont give at all would give only a small percent. imagine the good things that churches could do.

My son tithes his birthday money, etc. and just gives it whenever the money comes to him. Really, everything we have belongs to God, not just 10 percent. And if you wish to serve God you could give your time and talents by visiting the elderly or helping with the little kids, whatever your talent is. That can mean a lot more than money.
