I read that the average person should defecate atleast once a day, is this true? If someone defecates alot less than the average person does, could it be a health issue?

Defecation isn't really a subject I enjoy talking about..but oh well.

For a while I haven't been doing it much. I just do it once every other day and sometimes every three days.

I think it might be because i'm still young (teenager) and because I don't eat what the "average" person does..which is meat, fish, eggs since i'm a vegetarian, but i'm not sure.

Should I worry and mention this to my doctor or is this not a big deal?

First off, if you are eating a healthy, balanced vegetarian diet, you should actually have significantly more bowel movements than the average meat-eater. An excess of animal proteins in the digestive tract, like is eaten in most wester countries, especially the USA, slows up the works a bit.

In general, the average, healthy person past the toddler age range should defecate once to twice per day. (Much more than that isn't usually a good thing.)

Although every other day indicates you might need a little more fiber and water in your diet, it's not really anything to worry about, unless it's causing you discomfort or abdominal distention.

Every three days or so is starting to push it. While this isn't a long enough span to be of great concern, it does indicate that there is a most likely minor issue somewhere. I would guess you are either not getting enough fiber, roughage and such (unlikely if you have a well-planned veg diet, very likely if you're a junk-food vegetarian), or you are not getting enough fluid, especially water.

Try to make your diet a little more poo-friendly, as described above, and see if that changes anything. If you are taking in enough of everything, you might have a slightly less than efficient system. As it stands, if it isn't uncomfortable and it doesn't become any less frequent than now, you don't really need to mention it to your doctor. Your system may just be still working itself out.

Good luck.

I am a Wellness Consultant by profession. The average person is not healthy. So your question should be "How often should a HEALTHY person defecate per week?" The answer is twice per day or 14 times per week. Any less is usually a sign of poor nutrition and/or dehydration. You should be drinking half your weight in ounces of water per day. (If you weigh 100 lbs. you should drink 50 oz. of water daily.) If you know that you are consuming a healthy portion of fiber and that your water intake is what it should be and you are still having trouble, you may indeed have a health issue that will need to be discussed with a professional.

Note: it is allways better to improve nutrition, water intake, and exercise before considering over-the-counter or prescription drugs due to the ever-growing lists of side effects.

If you defecate once every other day, that's fine. Healthy bowel movement frequency is anything from 3 times a day to 3 times a week. As you mentioned, your diet can influence your bowel movements and their frequency, along with a lot of other factors like metabolism, your level of physical activity, etc. You can try adding more fiber and plenty of water to your diet; an easy way to do this is with Metamucil capsules or poweder. They also make Metamucil wafers. Of course if you have problems with constipation, bloating, etc you can talk to your doctor about it.

Daily at the least. You need to get more fiber in your body. Eat more fruits, veggies, salad, whole grain breads. Also, try getting some metamucil at the drug store and drink a glass nightly. It could help you get things moving.

You shouldn't worry, just try drinking at least 6 cups of water a day. This'll help you be an "average person".
