Depending on where you are and what you're doing you get:

combat pay
haz duty pay
tax free
if you have a family, you get family sep pay
and you also get paid when you return for traveling (hotels there and back, sometimes plane or taxi costs, per diem, I think it's only $3.50 per day in Iraq, but that adds up to 1200 extra a year.

The US soldiers are not losing in Iraq. This is and has been a failure of leadership. Our soldiers do the best they can with what they are provided. half the number of troops that were recomended were sent in by Bush/Rumsfeld at the begining and so we were never able to secure the country. Since then our troops wer enever given the adequate tools to do the job they were asked. They also have never been given a clear or consistent objective or reason fo being there. That failure lies with the leadership NOT the soldiers

They make more in Iraq. They will get the $225 for combat pay as others have mentioned, but it is also a tax free zone, so they don't have to pay taxes on what they make while they are there either.

I am pretty sure there is still a hazardous duty pay in Iraq. However, that may be somewhat offset because married soldiers, with children may well have extra child care costs as well as other costs due to his absence.

Tough to say really. Stateside, they get an allowance for dining. Over there, they get no allowance for food, but they DO get hazardous duty pay AND a family separation pay. But, they don't get to take leave AND, if they go over 90 days on the books, they lose their vacation time -- and can't sell it back. They get about $200 more a month.
