My husband is in the army (e4) and will be deploying to Iraq. While he's there his contract will be up, and when he gets home he immediately wants to join the Coast Guard. Can he do this? How does he do it? Will he lose rank or pay? Will they take him? Will he have to do boot camp? Can someone tell me how this works? Thanks guys!

1. most likely he can transfer to another service branch (in his case its army to CG.) with not much hassle cause they already know he's medically fit for military standards

2. He might even be lucky enough to transfer to the same rank (e4) with no problem.

3 . As for bootcamp, I dont know if he has to do something of that nature, since he might have to learn some sea-lingo and basic CG stuff.

4. He might have to do some tech-school or A-school time to learn his new CG career field too.

5. Its best to contact a CG recruiter about this kind of info. There's no harm in calling those numbers and asking question right? I mean, that's what they get paid to do.

Pretty much, only the Army, Navy and Marines take prior service.

The Air Force and Coast Guard do, but rarely.

Last year the Air Force only allowed 39 prior service enlistments, that included prior AF service also.

His bet bet, would be to go talk to a Coast Guard recruiter, as soon as he gets back.

During the 90 days, the Army has to discharge him after the deployment.

That way, he can find out, if the Coast Guard is taking prior service at the time, it does change from week to week, depending on the needs of the Coast Guard.

He should probally talk to the navy also, if he doesn't want to stay in the Army.

The Basic question is usually made on a case by case basis.

The Army,Air Force and Coast guard all have a shortened version of basic that all prior service must attend. But it is mainly dealing with uniform issue, making sire you pass the PT test and a quick course on service custons and ranks.

Your treated like your treated during an NCO school, not as recruits.

The rank issue, depends, on if retraining will be needed, and again, is made on a case by case basis.

You could actually go talk to the Coast Guard recruiter now, since you know your husbands rank and MOS.

He could give you some idea, now, instead of waiting.

it will be EXTREMELY difficult. Coast Guard takes almost no Prior service period.
