If they had hit an adult stranger with a broom, it would be assault. I don't see how hitting their child makes it any less of an assault in anyone's eyes.

As for it being child abuse - as a one off, it would probably be classed as an assault. If it is part of an ongoing pattern of physical chastisement, which leaves you frightened, and bruised, then, yes, it is child abuse.

No adult should be swinging for a kid with a broom.

It's not only child abuse, it's domestic abuse. Stress is no reason to assault anyone, especially if that person is not the stressor. The physical factor (hitting with the broom) makes it child abuse. The parent could simply have TOLD the child that the situation is private and will be worked through in its own time without any intervention.

However, what makes it domestic abuse is the use of force against a person (lover, husband, wife, child) with whom one has an intimate (not just sexual, but familial or closely personal) relationship.

Anyone who resorts to force to resolve any type of situation--stressful as it may be--should seek counselling.

Are you a dog being shooed? If not, then my vote would be that it is inappropriate as punishment, but there are many more factors which would have to be known before one could make the determination of "child abuse."

On the other hand, one should remember that the Bible says spare the rod and spoil the child. Therefor if you are a Christian, you must support corporeal punishment or else you must admit to not believing the teachings of the book upon which your faith is founded

No

Not unless they put bruises all over you from it. It's not child abuse if you spank a child. Child abuse should be used to defind real abuse. Think of it this way, would you like to be taking away from your parent's over reporting being hit? Raised by strangers in a group home? The group homes have strick rules, they don't put up with bad behavior. If they don't like you they move you to a different group home.

It depends if they used the brushy side or the stick part. If it's the stick part, I think it would be child abuse. Did they kind of gently poke you, or like...er...WHAM! But overall, if it hurt you, it is considered child abuse (I think).

How often has it happened? If it has happened more than once, its abuse. Maybe steer clear of your parents when they're upset.
