'training time'?

Question

have 4 yrs as a ward nurse began a new job as delivery room nurse. the nurse manager for that dept is on vacations an all the training is done by staff. Staff nurses give input to the director of nursing on how we are doing. Most of the time the teaching ocurrs when we do things differently or dont fill out forms the way they do. Love the dept but im dissapointed by the way things are done. opinions welcome,thanks!!

It would seem to be a rather haphazard way of training, and there should be a person on the unit assigned to replace the unit manager in their absence. It is highly inefficient for the nurses to report staff nursing errors to the DON, those should be taken care of, by supervisors in the management chain, unless you are at a very small facility.

That means training in that area is not that much, however, the Head nurse when she returns, might teach or maintain the same mode of training. I don't believed that the training in the said ward is that rigid, because if the staff are training you as mistake occurs and I don't believed this is often or it is a normal occurrence, this only shows the basic nursing methodology is generally the same except for some details that needs to be learned with skill, you can expect the head nurse to do the same. What her staffers do for training is a mirror image of how she is doing the training.

General Nursing methodology are the same except for some desired specialized skills, like for example caring for an infant is different to caring for an adult. This is the reason why most of the time they just teach you those things that are not common. I agree with Alecs. You have to get used to it and try your best what is there to learn by yourself. You can do this by reading books. Regarding filling out forms, yes, this will be totally different on other type of nursing specialty.

all of our training is done by our staff nurses...usually our new hires are given a specific amount of one-on-one orientation/training time with one staff member to learn the paperwork, policies and procedures in our unit...we have general hospital orientation that is handled thru the nursing ed dept for new hires and clinical nurse specialists that aid in training...evaluations of your progress during this period is filled out by your staff preceptor..any problems/issues are addressed by the staff nurse and nurse manager before it ever reaches our director of nursing...perhaps you should ask for a few days of shadowing a staff member so you can learn the correct procedures, before they lose you as an employee...sounds like you want to do your job well, but if they don't adequately train you to begin with, they are setting themselves and you up for disappointment and frustration...
