Does anyone know the date that the Marines became "activated" during WWII? I don't mean the date that Pearl Harbor was attacked. I mean the date that the Marines were activated into attack mode? Obviously during Pearl Harbor, which my mother and father were a part of was the date that we entered the "war" but when was the official announcement given to the Naval/Marine Corp? I"m doing a history book and can't find the date. Thanks and Semper Fi to our Marines of then.

The Marine Barracks at Eight and Eye Street, along with the Marine detachments at Quantico were placed on alert right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Marine sentries were put on guard mount atop the dome of the Capitol building and around the Executive Office Building which served as the headquarters of the War Department, Navy Department and State Department.
The first major engagements by the Marines was the defense of Midway Island and the landings at Guadalcanal and Tulagi in the Solomons in 1942.

Realistically speaking the Marines like the Army and the Navy were 'activated' when the bombs began falling on Pearl. However your choice of words is incorrect. The Armed Forces are always active. If you mean when did they go into the attack mode officially I would hazard the answer that they were truly into the 'attack mode' when Roosevelt went before the joint session of congress on 8 December and the war became official. In real terms only the Reserves and the National Guard are 'activated'.

if you are talking about when the marines were first formed, then that was Nov. 10, 1775. I didn't quite understand your question. They were never in a state of inactivity, i don't think, I hope you find a better answer than mine, I just didn't get what you meant. sorry.
