Best bet for 5 days would be tour guides, who have already explored the city, know the sites, eateries and options. Going solo in a land is fine if you know the language fluently and are partially familiar with the surroundings.

If you're going solo:

Day 1.

Tian'anmen Square, Forbidden City, and Jingshan Hill (provides a beautiful view of the city). Don't overdo yourself on your first day.

Day 2.

Summer Palace, Xiangshan mountain, and Wofi Si (Sleeping Buddha Temple). You'll do a lot of walking this day.

Day 3.

In the morning, visit the Great Wall at Badaling. Then go exploring the Hutongs (traditional alleyways of Beijing) with traditional homes. Try Qianmen Hutong. There's a big open-air market nearby this hutong where you can buy cool stuff.

Day 4. Yonghegong (Tibetan Lama Buddhist Temple) and Kong Miao (Confucius Temple).

Day 5. Shopping at Wangfujing and Xidan (big shopping districts).

All these are grouped according to a specific geographical region of Beijing (i.e., Tian'anmen Square and Forbidden City are side-by-side).

At nighttime, check out the bar/entertainment districts: Sanlitun (more modern with Western-style pubs) and Houhai (much more scenic and traditional).

Have fun in Beijing.
