Mistaken. Tell him that you think he has made a mistake and has your trash cans. Confronted, what can he do but give them back, esp when you point out your address on them? Or, when the trash has been picked up and the cans are empty, just pick them up and take them home.

assuming you bought them, and didn't inherit them with the house, im gonna assume you know they are yours.
If you want to try to get along, just go knock on the door, and say
"Not sure if you noticed, but you took my trash cans."
or
Just wait for trash day and grab them after they are empty.
If you want revenge,
Wake up early on trash da, and empty the trash can on their front porch, and take the trash cans back.
Of course your gonna feel like a jerk if the guy had a heart attack, and his nephew is house sitting and grabbed them by accident or something.

Use humor... Ask if you can have your barrells back because your house is starting to smell from the piles of trash in your kitchen. I'm sure your %$#@ neighbor will laugh and tell you he had no idea. ( LIAR! )

I'd call em pretty darn stupid, because here's what ya do:
Put a pile of trash in his yard, and hopefully, he notices.....and asks, Hey, why the trash in my yard?
Because you have my trash cans and when I get my trash cans back I'll take the trash outta your yard! Biiiiiiingo! Then, say, stay outta my yard (no trespassing).
A good windy day would really stir it too....om
