Getting shot, even with a shot gun, is not like getting hit by a solid piece of metal like say... a car. If you get shot, the bullet goes through you. It is going to push you back a little bit thats for sure, but its not going to take you off the ground and send you flying back some odd feet. The coughing up blood depends on where you get shot.

It depends on the ammo, but at close range, at shotgun transmits a LOT of kinetic energy. I've never heard of anyone just "back up a couple of inches and cough blood".
The standard anti-personnel round for a 12-gauge shotgun is a 2-3/4 inch 00 buck magnum load, and they each hold 9, 32 caliber pellets which leave the muzzle at 1325 feet per second. That's like 9 people shooting you with James Bonds favorite gun, all at the exact, same time.

A shotgun fires two kinds of rounds. Slugs and shot. A slug is basicly like a musket ball. One big bullet. Shot is a bunch of little "balls". If you were to get shot by a slug it has a lot more likelihood of going through you than shot. Also, it depends on where you get shot. (ie more likely to go through your neck than your chest) I would imagine if you got hit by a slug the impact would probably knock you down. If you got hit by shot I would guess you could stay standing.

Shotguns fire two different types of loads, shot or slug. Neither is likely to penetrate all the way through a human body, but either fired close enough could knock you off your feet. Only a penetration of the lungs or trachea will have you coughing up blood.

That would depend on many different things.
The type of shotgun, 16 gauge , 12 gauge, 20 gauge?
The type of load. Shot or slug?
The distance from the gun.
Even clothing could be a factor

if it's buck shot then you will probably feel it a little, but if it's a slug shot you are going down fast.
