"Augustus" was a title of respect, as one source has it. By the time of Constantine, "augustus" was a rank in the hierarchy before one became emperor. The website www.biblestudy.org has an article about Sunday worship. If I'm not mistaken, both that site and wikipedia had articles about Constantine and his rise through the ranks, as it were.

The ORIGINAL Caesar Augustus was originally named Octavian.
