Anyone can be a bridesmaid, married, single, divorced, etc. they just have to be close friends or relatives of the bride. Unmarried women are more "traditionally" bridesmaids, but there are hardly any rules. Even the maid of honor can be married, she's just called matron of honor then.

that's really not that big of a deal..Who will know that the bridesmaid is divorced besides you and a few others. That rule is based off of how bridesmaids were traditionally a long long time ago...
It's your wedding you do what you want. I was just reading and a guy said that he was gonna have a guy be one of his brides maids...with a dress and all..
So it's all up to you.

You can have anyone you want serve as a brides"maid" for you on your wedding day. It doesn't matter if she's married or not. I've been a bridesmaid after I was married, heck, I was my best friend's matron of honor--all because I got married 3 months before she did!!!
I think this is a "rule" but it's a very old fashioned one, and one that hardly anyone (except old biddy grandmas) pays attention to anymore. Thank goodness!!

Okay. This is one of those changing traditions. In modern circles just about anyone can be your bridesmaid. Your best friend, cousin, mom, brother, dog, polyamorous transexual bestfriends. Whomever you like. Married maids of honor are called matrons of honor, but everyone else is called a bridesmaid.
But historically, bridesmaids were the roughly same age as the b & g and were single, hence the "maid" bit.
Groomsmen don't get distinguished by marital status. But, if you're getting married I'm sure you're no stranger to the double standard that applies to women and their names vs. men and their names.

Anyone you want can be a bridesmaid regardless of marital status. Rules have changed. You can always change the name to bridesmatron if they are married. I like that, I have all married friends I want in my wedding so I cannot pick one maid of honor. It's your wedding, do what you want to, throw the rules out the window!!

I wouldn't even worry about stupid rules like that. If I was having bridesmaids (I'm not) they would be married. Because my choices would be my sisters in-law and my best friend, all are married.
Don't worry about it.

Any of your friends or family can be a bridesmaid. I've even seen a mother of the bride be the matron of honor once. Unusual, but it worked.

Hi. Who told you only unmarried women can be a bridesmaid? My goodness...NO! Single, married, divorced, widowed...anyone!
Same rules for the groomsmen...single, married, divorced, widowed, gay, straight....anything goes!!
Perhaps what they were saying is a single women would be a Maid of Honor, but a married woman (if you chose one) would be your Matron of Honor....same duties (the bride's right hand lady), just different titles if they are single or married.
