I have so many cowlicks that I have to tease my hair everyday, so I'm good at this. First, tease your hair with a fine-tooth comb, and tease sections that are one inch by one inch. Don't back comb too hard, because if you do you'll cause your hair to break. You have to be gentle. Before you tease an area, spray it lightly with medium hold hair spray and give the spray a couple seconds to dry, then tease. Tease along your part, at the crown, and at the sides if they are too flat. Then you have to gently, gently comb the top layer of hair down smoothly to cover up the back combing. If it's bumpy or uneven, gently rake the comb through those areas vertically and just gently tug those areas smooth, or use your fingertips to "comb" the bumpy areas. Once you get the look you want, spray it lightly with a maximum hold hair spray. I've also learned that when teasing and smoothing, less is more. Overstyling makes me look like I walked out of 1985. Teasing takes practice, but once you get the hang of it, you can make your hair do all kinds of amazing things.

Wow I was hoping to never see this question ...but when the movie hairspray came out again - I knew it was back....

Take a hunk of your hair-usually the back/top of your head first. Hold the ends up with one hand and with your rattail brush or comb insert it midway on the strand and stroke downwards - keep repeating until you have what in essence is a small "rats" nest or bunched hair. Smooth the top layer over it gently so as to not ruin the lift. Hairspray when you have the look you want.

Take a rat tail comb, or a find tooth comb. Pull a section of hair and comb it backwards, sort of knotting it as its back combed. Do a few sections based on how much lift you want.

Flip your head upside down, and use hair spray to set it. Flip back up, and gently brush your hair to straighten the teased hair out a little.

Don't do it too often, or you will get lots of breakage. Its not the healthiest thing for your hair.

You get a comb and brush from top to down (backwards from how you regularly comb) at the crown. then put hairspray to hold.
