Yes, even if you have Windows already installed (and paid for), you could run free, legal software on Windows. That includes software replacing MS Office and free Antivirus.

As before mentioned, a Linux operating system (Ubuntu etc.) is another option, it totally replaces any windows OS and it's all free.

Yes, just about everything.

You may find a commercial package that you like better then the free ones, but you can find a free package for just about any and every application.

Absolutely - MS would love you to think otherwise but Linux and Sun are really so much better and you can download freeware for any "projects" from .pdf to movie making. Don't buy the hype open source is safe.
