I like photography, but unfortunately I'm a very basic beginner. I'm certified in Microsoft Office programs and I'm currently making a good wage as an Excel/Access specialist, but I don't want to do this with the rest of my life and I think something along the lines of digital photography may be something I would like to pursue. (I'm 23)

But I don't like the idea of taking pics of kids, married couples, family portraits, high school graduates, etc... I think I would be more interested in focusing on nature, animals (especially birds), science (especially astronomy related... as long as it doesn't require too much of a science background... I'm not a scientist), etc... (And no, I don't want to go into journalism and take pics of current events / news)

Does anyone know of any non-human subject photography job titles / careers I could consider? Thanks.

I took photography classes in high school. A while ago, I started going to local horse shows (very ameture shows) and taking pictures of the people riding. For me it was origionally to take pictures of my daughter and her friends, but at one show a woman asked if I was the photographer. I just asked her what number she was and made sure to take lots of pics of her. I then got her name and email and after the show I edited a bunch of pics and contacted her. I met her at a coffee shop and showed her the disc I made on my laptop. I ended up selling her the disk and she liked it so much I ended up being called by her several times to photograph her and her friends riding. Word spread and I ended up with a pretty good business. You can check with local tack shops in your area and find out where low level shows are if you are interested. Then you can call and tell the organizers that you are trying to start a business and ask them about shooting at their shows.

The pet care industry is booming, and has been for a long time. How about offering pet portraits? I used to take my cat to see Santa and the Easter Bunny every year, and when he died, I used to take my dog. I'm a little old for that now, but I would definitely have pet portraits done of my dogs if I could find one that was affordable and did good job. You don't even have to open up a studio. Most animals are more comfortable at home, so you could do the portraits at the pet's own house.

A second option is to take pictures of nature and landmarks that are of regional interest where you live, mount and frame them, and then sell them at craft shows. It costs very little to get a booth at a non-juried craft show, and if your photographs and your framing are top notch, you can sell your work easily. I have personal experience with this, and I know you can sell good quality, framed photographs for well over $100.

Amazon.com is a good place to find books on how to make money in photography. They also have books on how to enter craft shows and how to frame photos.

How about food photography? I kick myself for not getting into that one. There are all sorts of tricks conjured up. If you knew what was really in the food it would gross you out. For example, they put marbles in soup to make the veggies in the soup float to the top. Lots of food shots have the food held in place with hidden pins, glue, and other things you wouldn't actually want to eat, yet the food looks SO appetizing!

There is also photojournalism, which may or may not involve people, depending on the assignment. And on some assignments you may just be taking pictures of people as part of the background (for example, a crowd scene at a political rally). You wouldn't be involved in instructing the person to pose. You would just be trying to get the best picture in a natural situation.

How about a pet photographer for pet magazines? (Like the ones about dogs or cats) There may also be ones for birds too.

Or you could just go into the business of taking pet portraits. Maybe you could model pets into something to take pictures of and create a book out of it (say, dress up hamsters in doll clothes and put them in various rooms in a dollhouse? heh..well ok, that might be a bit girly for you...)

Since you're good at computers, maybe you can even create a video of animals doing certain things or being funny. Link it to a website about animal stories, and there ya go.

There are a lot of ideas you could use photographing just animals. Best of luck :)

Maybe National Geographic; lots of landscape pictures. You can also photograph architecture or different countries. Maybe you can take photographs of strange things, such as the gum on the floor.
