Also, how much does insurance cost for doctors/surgeons? I know it must vary between the different types of medical professions, but can you give me an estimate? Thanks

I know several doctors that went from a large corporation into private practice. Within 3 years they were back in the corporation.

Reason. They were paying over $1,500,000 a year each for insurance, office rental, staff, and equipment.

Thanks to insurance companies and HMO's, it's no longer profitable to be in solo private practice. You can make a living, but not a great one. Group practices are becoming more common to cut down on overhead costs. Of course, there are exceptions to the rules, like plastic surgeons where insurance and HMO's don't pay for elective cosmetic reasons.
