During the second world war, the Nazis had a underground messerschidt Repair Factory. It could hold over 400 boxcars and had an underground railway running from Lundwigshoffen to its location. It had twoo elevators they brought the aircraft up with and then the aircraft would be towed or taxi up to the autobaun for take off and landing. The allies had a time figuring out where these aircraft were coming from.

After 22 years on active duty and 4 tours based in Germany, I am sorry to say I never heard of anyplace like that along the Rhine. And I would think I would have with a total of 14 years in country. But ya never know. Hope someone can enlighten us both.

There is no U.S. base built with the river Rhine flowing under it.

Nor was there any secret underground railway system running for any major distance in Germany either.

The Nazi specialised in building underground production facilities, normally in mountains, there was one which was inside a mountain and had a lift to the surface on the top of the mountain ridge was a runway for the planes to take off, but they were going to forward airfields and it was not a combat ready airstrip.

I was just in Ludwigshafen (vs your Lundwigshoffen) on Saturday. A quick search and I think this is the place you need to looking up for more information on this story. It is a factory heavy location and nestled beautifully on the Rhine. There are a lot of museums and tours available for that area. I have never toured there; we just visit the go-cart track.
