there are three basic types of catfish people eat. The flathead. the channel, and the blue. The flathead is primarily a live bait feeder. The channel eats a lot of live bait, but will feed on other things. Think of the blue as the buzzard of the water. He will eat anything he can get in his mouth.

i catch catfish using live bait all the time. i use a casting net to get minnows and small brim. the brim stay on the hook very securely so that is what i end up catching most of my cats on. but they do eat anything. once i threw gum in the water. a couple of days later i was cleaning a cat i caught and there was the wad of gum in it's stomach.

Catfish, will eat almost anything that is in the water. 1 time, when the acorns were falling off the trees, i caught a bunch of catfish, that their intestines were full of acorns.
i have also found frogs, twigs, leaves, berries & many other things in their digestive tract.

Anything smaller than them selves. I noticed they like worms and anything that reeks. Chicken liver and Hawg Wild are great. Just don't get any of the Hawg Wild on your hands. You'll never get the stink off. The also go after dead blue gills.
Catfish are very tasty.

Catfish are primarily nocturnal feeders, but do feed during the day and are scavangers (sure good eatin' though!!). Link below should help out ~ the second paragraph on page will give ya' a run down on their diet ie., what they like ta', "scarf " on ;)...

although primarilly a bottom feeder, I have also caught them on jigs while fishing for crappie. A strong smelling bait works very well when fished on the bottom. I have also seen catfhish chasing small bait fish.

They like other game fish do chase bait. So any type fo shad, skip jack herrings, bluegill they will. They do like to feed deep they will come up shallow to feed if bait is available.
