Usually it just goes away. You should get rid of as much stress as you can and exercise. Make sure to go outside.

"Holiday depression," meaning situational sadness vs. a bonafide depression? Big difference, depression being chemical and holiday depression being situational.

Anyway, of course a lot depends on what your situation is during the holidays that is feeding into your low mood. Are you unable to be with family? Did you just lose someone close to you? etc., etc. Time heals all, but until then ... .

Right now my brother is on a 13 week job in another state. He may have to work on Xmas Eve & Xmas Day. He's really stressing about not being able to drive home (6 hours) to be with family. He works in healthcare, in a hospital setting, and right now in pediatrics. I told him he's surely not the only person in that city who will be away from home on the holiday. There are kids and their families in a tougher situation than he is; I told him if it was me, I would buy a Santa beard and hat and go around to visit the kids in the hospital, if I couldn't go home.

I think if you put the focus on what you can give to someone else, you will forget about your holiday depression, and I also think what goes around, comes around!

Stress and anxiety over Christmas holidays is quite common, there is so much buildup, people are tired, worried about money, families have arguments and people without families can feel very lonely.

My top tips:
very little is really essential at Christmas. Make a list of the things that are absolutely vital. I'm thinking just 5 or 6 things maximum. My list would be:
- wreath for door and small Christmas tree
- simple presents for immediate family
- nice food, not necessarily traditional, for Christmas day
- a game everyone can enjoy, like Jenga
- be kind to people and remember it only lasts 48 hours
- go to church and enjoy the carols

Don't try to do everything. If you are on your own, be glad you can do your own thing. If you have family, be kind to them it will not last long but happy memories last all year.

Good luck
