I was aslo thinking about like doing a sort of a program where you like read to a child in a hospital. Does anybody know any programs like that, or anything else

humane society programs are usually doing school hours and to go to a childrens hospital you have to be at least 16 in most hospitals and most likely have to be trained.

Identify what time of day, on what days, you are available to volunteer. Also, identify your transportation options -- how will you get to service opportunities? (will a parent drive you, or will you take mass transit?). Finally, make sure your parent is willing to come with you, if needed, to sign any forms that may be needed for you to volunteer.

VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations. These are great places to look for volunteering opportunities. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site.

Communities of Faith (churches, temples and mosques) often have group community service activities.

Volunteering is fun... but's also a lot of WORK. It's a serious commitment, and sometimes you have to do the not-so-fun things (stuffing envelopes, filing papers, etc.) to earn a place to do the more "fun" things.

You can be a candystriper at age 14 in most states....ask your local hospital; you can also sign up with the humane society to do their 'adopt-a-pet' days....this is where they will bring some animals out to a walmart or a pet store to get more attention for the animals...they always need volunteers for these and they are almost always on a Saturday. good luck!!

you could prefer to examine out Médecins Sans Frontières (medical doctors with out borders). they seem to be a worldwide self sufficient scientific humanitarian employer that provides emergency help to people laid low with potential of armed conflict, epidemics, organic and guy-made mess ups, and exclusion from wellness care.
