I have three children , ages 21, 18 ,17 to show me they were responsible... or not so.. cause the youngest is still pretty hit and miss..
My oldest found a job... he followed through on commitments, if he said he was going to do something, (ie.. chores, go to the store..etc..) he did it.
My Daughter who is 18, is still working on it as well, but has moved out of the house and lives with friends.
So I would say, following through with things you say you are going to do.

The first thing you do is start taking more responsibility around the house...without being asked. Pick up, make sure especially that you are taking good care of your own things, offer to help out. It shows that you are conscientious and considerate of the needs of others. Also, find a way to make some money. You should be willing to take on some of the financial responsibility of a pet yourself. Research different types of pets, and different breeds. Your lifestyle will make it impossible to care for certain kinds of animals...for example if you live in an apartment, you can't have a dog because you don't have enough space or a yard for them to play in. Birds generally require lots of attention...they are very social, so if you don't have much time to spend with a pet then a bird isn't right for you. Find a pet that is feasible for you and your family, and learn all about how to take care of it, how much it will cost to feed it and get it regular veterinary care, and what sort of attention it needs. It will show your parents that you are serious, and that you are willing to make the kind of long term commitment that a pet requires.

The best way to make them think you are responsible is to SHOW THEM. Examples: follow their rules, keep your room clean, and clean up your messes around the house. If you are in school, try to do your homework. Basically you want to do all those things that you know you SHOULD be doing so they don't have to tell you to do them.
After you have done this for several weeks, talk with one of your parents and say that you are trying to be more responsible and you wonder what they feel about how you've been doing so far. THEN KEEP IT UP. After you have done this for a month or two, ask for a pet. If I were a parent and a kid did that I would let that kid get a really cool pet.

Where I live we have a place called the Maxfund. It is a no kill animal shelter and they ALWAYS need volunteers to help out with walking the dogs, feeding them and spending time with them. Maybe if you spent some time volunterring with animals they would see you were serious, and at the same time you would learn about all the responsibilities that go along with having a pet. I can not remember a time in my life w/out a dog and they are a lot of responsibilities that go along with having one. So many people get them, love them as a "puppy" then get bored with them and they end up neglected in a backyard somewhere, so please take out the time to learn more about them yourself and then mom and dad will see how serious you are.

Well, if what you want is a pet, talk it over with your parents, and see if you can start taking care of a neighbors dog to prove you are responsible. After a while of showing how responsible you are, they will be more likely to get you a dog. Just don't constantly ask them about it.

Show them in your everyday actions.
Make up your bed after you wake up, clean up after your meals, help out with chores, laundry and dishes, basically make sure after everything you do, your parents doesn't have to help clean up after you.
Show them you can function well as an individual without making a mess if nobody is around to help, then after a while they will be convinced that you are mature and responsible to have a pet.

You have to show them you are responsible. Like cleaning your room, doing your homework, picking up after yourself. If they see you do things like that they will be more likely to get you a pet.
