Santa Claus is a twist on Saint Nicholas. A very real and very generous person towards children especially.

His patronage includes children, sailors, fishermen, the falsely accused, pawnbrokers, thieves, and many cities including New York.

What we have now is Coca Cola's bastardization of a lovely person.
