Thanks for the answers (even the mean and unnecessary ones). I wasn't joinging for the money. I was in JROTC for 4 years and I participated in everything that was allowed. I actually enjoyed it. My only reason for not wanting to go is strictly out of fear.

Once again, thanks for the responses.

Mike1942, SBryantD, ILovemyV...., and a few more, yours were most helpful. Thanks!

the Job of the military is to deploy to war.

But if you like the military, want to serve and don't want to deploy there is only one option:

The State Guard (not the National Guard) or State Defense Force

Not every state has one but they are the true Minutemen, citizens who volunteer their time to train until called to serve their State.

The purpose of our Armed Forces is to protect and defend the American people and the Constitution. Soldiers in the past and present have stood up when called upon and have fought, suffered, and died for this cause. If you think you are too good that, if you are not willing to do the same, then stay your *** at home and watch Oprah and play your X-Box.

People like you have no business even wasting the time of military recruiters. Actually, in my eyes, people like you do not deserve the freedoms and protections guarenteed by this great nation and our Constitution. Men and women have gone to war and died so that we all can enjoy freedom. When you join the military, you sign a contract saying that you will fight for this country, in exchange for pay and other benefits. Why should you recieve any benefits and not be willing to fight?

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
-John Stewart Mill

No. Even when people enlisted under a program that supposedly promised this, the Army wasn't bound to it. And officers are even less likely.
And considering 9/11, it is impossible to guarantee anyone that they won't go to war.

If you don't want to be sent to war, why are considering entering the military during a time of war? Unless you have some skill that is needed in other areas, you could well be sent to a war in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Why would you expect special favors when we need people to serve in war zones?

If you want to join just for the benefits, then don't. The country, the Army, and I don't need you. All recruits like that do is make the numbers look large. But in reality, not all of the Soldiers would do what they are told just because it doesn't benefit them. Thank you for your thought, but stay out of my ARMY if you don't want to be part of the team.

No. Plan on going to war because the need for troops in Iraq is at all time high. You will probably be there for only about 3 years.

The only way to guarantee that you won't go to Iraq is not to join. Everyone goes. I am an 18 yr vet and have deployed over 7 times. No one is spared. You can't take the benefits and not pay the price.

If you are concerned about going to war then don't join any branch of the military. We need able Solder's, Airmen, Sailor, Marines in the military who will not question orders and deploy to defend freedom around the world.
