My dad, 45 years old, was almost paralyzed after falling 14 feet into a concrete basement while working at a construction site. My dad suffered sever permanent injuries to his back, including some that crushed many disks in between his spine. I have heard many great things about Acupressure therapy and its' healing abilities. Is there any form of acupressure or massage that we could try with my dad to releive his pain? And to top it off my dad has arthritis in his back and the cold weather takes a terrible toll on his back. So anything will be greatly appreciated.

Acupressure is based on same meridian system as acupuncture. This isn't something that you should be messing around with without proper education. Contacting the wrong spot may make the condition or somewhere else worse. Stick with massage, it's difficult to seriously hurt someone with massage.

Hi Monkeyst

Acupressure vs Acupuncture is a great debate, but no matter what you try, both are good. Look at it this way...

If your father has chronic back pain then the pain has become habitual. His body is used to having pain and therefore to eliminate it you need to break the old habits and replace it with new habits. This trains the body to work better and have less pain.

Acupuncture - you need a therapist!

To break a habit it takes 31 days .... 31 days in a row seeing a therapist = expensive!! Even if you could get a therapist to work 31 days in a row.

Acupressure - because you can do this at home you can do the techniques your self - for 31 days and then break the habit.

There are two main forms of Acupressure - one uses heavy pressure which is good for pain relief, the other form is like jumper cabling a battery - so no pressure needed. The gentle form is best for chronic habitual pain - and you can feel these points pulsing so you can see if they are working or not.

Add in some simple stretches and exercises and your dad's pain can dramatically reduce.

I am trained in Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Acupressure - so I know what works and what doesn't. Basically they all do - so it does come down to personal likes and dislikes.

The best advice is that Acupressure does empower you to help your self rather than being reliant on a practitioner.

As for safety...

You can not do the wrong Acupressure point, especially with the gentle forms, no side effects, can't over stimulate the points, and no pain is involved.

I don't believe in homeopathic medication. Take your father to a good neurologist and see what's going on in there first, there may be more then meets that eye and, in fact, without this information, you could cause more harm then good. Find out the facts first.
Then follow through with whatever treatment the doctor orders or what you'd like to do. At least you'll know what's going to happen.

I can't really see how acupressure can relieve something that's already damaged or broken. Acupuncture is the same thing, at best they are temporarily a relief.

Acupressure is best for acute pains only.

Acupuncture treats almost all chronic pains and locomotor disorders like paralysis.

There is no medicine for H/A, RA, OA, Back ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more. Pl try to avoid them.

We treat RA with our SHREE SWASTHYAYOG THERAPY but pl see how can you manage.
