The most important thing to understand is that atheists are not open-minded about God or any religion because they are just as firm with their belief as you are with yours (if you have a firm belief system): one things exists, everyone else is wrong. The concept at least is really not that different from any other religion. Atheists are not open-minded but they can "accept" and have friends with different religions. The term you're thinking about is "Agnostic." Agnostics, like atheists, do not firmly believe in a certain god but they are definately open-minded. They're the type of people who wait for concrete proof that something exists. If Jesus just suddenly appeared in front of an atheist, the athiest would not accept what happened, whereas an agnostic most likely would. But the athiest situation would probably work the same way if the Indian god "Shiva" appeared in front of a Christian...not so great results.

Atheists are close-minded to the idea of god but the religious are closed to anything and everything that contradicts their beliefs. I'd rather be slightly close-minded and not rely on the supernatural to explain all of life's mysteries than to be very close-minded and say that everything that is, was and ever will be is the will of a supernatural being that may or may not exist.

i think many theists might say that i'm closed-minded. And, of direction, I accept as true with you - this is not that i haven't examined the information handy. Like many atheists, i'm extremely confident in asserting that i comprehend greater on the subject of the Bible (e.g.) than the vast majority of Christians. I purely think of that's a load of psychopathy and superstition. Nor can i say that I save an open innovations that possibly Jesus somewhat WILL come lower back and waste each little thing. Nor do I assume the different variety of apocalypse as expected via the different faith. no longer by way of fact i'm "closed-minded" - by way of fact i'm a rational man or woman. i've got reviewed the "information," or lack thereof, and reached a end. If we toss that out of the window, then no one can ever have any opinion on something. If theists desire to insist that i'm closed-minded on that account, i might purely assertion that on that argument, this is extremely closed-minded of them to stick to their faith of selection on the cost of all others. in reality, to have faith that Jesus is God (e.g.), yet no longer Zeus, or Brahma, or Huitzilopochtli, is easily greater closed-minded than to easily relegate the full pantheon to the area of mythology.

So, Hand, who is right? There are many different belief systems and many different Gods. All religions have reason to believe they are correct. None have hard proof in hand (at least that they are willing to share with the world). I am not an Atheist, but I feel in my heart of hearts that no religion has it ALL completely correct. I tend to become defensive when any religion says I am going to burn in Hell because I don 't prescribe to all of their beliefs and feel it would be wrong to join a religion that I did not whole hearted believe in out of fear. I do not believe God is so petty

Says who? I've never made that claim. I've studied the fenomena called god, and found it not to be based on reality.

I wouldn't say I'm closed minded, I love learning things. I just happen to view god to be pretty equal to leprichauns, or dragons.

I believe a person who's decided that only god matters has closed their minds from any alternatives.

A closed mind is someone that insists something despite evidence to the contrary. Do you have some actual evidence to prove the existence of your supernatural deity? No, so your belief is close minded because you are sure of something for which you have no proof.

Some atheists have not closed their mind, we are merely waiting for empirical evidence to show that deities are indeed real entities. Thus far, none has been given so given the lack of evidence we draw the logical conclusion that they don't exist.

I haven't "closed my mind to God".

I just have no reason whatsoever to believe that such a thing exists.

I am interested in the truth, so if God exists, I would like to know that. I am perfectly open and willing to examine any legitimate evidence someone can present.
No one has been able to provide any.

Sorry, but I think you are mistaken.

This atheist claims an open mind. However, this atheist will not accept the premise that one must first believe before evidence is presented.

Show me the evidence that supports the existence of your god. I am open to it. I will consider the quality of that evidence and then make up my mind to believe or not.

Until that happens, excuse me while I refuse to first believe in your god.

So you're saying that an open mind brought you to God? Is that the way most believers start believing? An open mind is what makes one see that it's a bunch of B.S. Most believers aren't open to that possibility, they'll tell you that they are 100% sure that God does exists.
