One thing that develops over the years is presbyopia-literay old eyes. It's not a problem with the shape of the eyeball as in near and far sightedness, its a matter of the lens itself. The lens becomes hard over age. There are muscles attached to the lens that pull and bend it to help us focus. A normal sighted young person can switch from reading the paper to looking at the TV without noticing that the shape of the lens is being adjusted to focus. As the lens get harder, it takes longer for the muscles to pull the lens into the coreect shape. A normal sighted person becomes a bit farsighted because the lenses are to hard to quickly adjust. For farsighted people the farsightedness gets worse. For nearsighted people (like me) there may be some improvement in far distance (but not enough to compensate for other changes in the eyes). As the song goes "your day will come"

because your eyes gradually weaken, and you find the need for glasses to read the fine print and make out the little details. Mine were fine until I reached 44 and some n'er do wells caught me and beat me up. My eyes have had a little trouble making out the fine details ever since. Now, I like all other 40+ need glasses for the fine print.

It's just natural degeneration of the eyes. Like other parts of your body, the better you take care of your eyes (good nutrition and reasonably healthy lifestyle), the longer you prolong the degeneration. I didn't need glasses until my late 40's, and still only need glasses for reading.

They don't. Some people get glasses much younger than that. Some people get them much older than that, or never. But eyes or sight does tend to deteriorate with age. Something about eye muscles getting tired.
