I am planning on starting to go to an elderly home with a group of people and perform community service. We plan to read to them. I thought we should perhaps read shorter pieces, like short stories and poems, and avoid depressing subject matter. My friend suggested that we also do projects with them.
Any ideas for further activities or suggestions for short pieces to read?

Stephen Leacock's Literary Lapses are short, humourous pieces from the 20's and 30's. When is this happening?

Read the newspaper -- there's much more news in the paper than on TV, and it would give them a lot of depth about various issues and events. Don't avoid "depressing" stories -- they are adults, and like being informed.

For people of faith, you could read passages of whatever book or literature is part of their religion. Many religions have "daily devotional" books, where each day has a thought for the day, based on a religious passage.

Singing is also HUGELY appreciated.
