I see a number of Christians saying they will boycott the movie "The Golden Compass."

Yet when asked, most atheists highly recommend reading the Bible from cover to cover?

Because the Bible is a better recruiting tool for atheism than anything Philip Pullman could write.

All the Christians are doing by saying they will boycott the golden compass is creating more publicity for it. They need to realise that fundamental christians are not the majority in this country and the rest of us are sick and tired of them meddling in what others can see, or do, even influencing politics.

As far as atheists recommending people read the bible, I've seen them do that because they think there is the possibility that if people read it they will see what the atheist sees in it - talking animals, gods impregnating virgins, everything that causes atheists to believe it is a book of nonsense, not to be taken seriously.

So, that's my answer, based on what I've seen on both sides.

Well I'm a Christian and I am not boycotting the movie. In fact I intend to go see it soon. I see nothing wrong with looking at and experiencing other perspectives and I understand that this movie/book is FICTION. I don't take what it says literally, because it's not even REAL. And, the atheist message doesn't offend me. I know that not everyone in this world thinks and believes the same things I do, so why be offended?

You are absolutely right! Most Christians like to poach here and there in the Bible just to support their view. They pretend to be totally ignorant of all the bloody murder and obscene stories in the Bible!

Isaiah went around NAKED talking against nations who have nothing to do with Israel... like Ethiopia and Egypt. Nowhere in the Bible is it written that Egypt invaded Israel. Actually Jacob* (*Israel) went to Egypt like the Mexicans come to the USA!

Christians depend on the only prophet who mentions a young girl who may have been a virgin before getting pregnant. Prophet Isaiah is notorious for prophesying the utterances of God NAKED for 3 years! That alone ought to tell you a lot about how kinky he can get! ...

Isaiah 20:2-3 KJV
At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking NAKED and barefoot. And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked NAKED and barefoot THREE YEARS for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia;

Obviously whoever wrote this episode must have been a pervert otherwise it shouldn't be wrong for a preacher to preach naked on TV today! It surely makes a point!

Well, I'm an atheist. the only logical explanation I can offer is that atheists are more open-minded than most Christians. We believe in life more than the afterlife. Any given religion is waiting for something better to come whilst atheism is currently orientated. Christians are afraid that something will challenge their beliefs beyond repair, so they completely block out reality.

Because the bible doesn't offend atheists because they don't believe it anyway. Anti-Christian movies or offensive to Christians the same way anti-gay movies offend homosexuals. No one likes having their beliefs attacks. Since atheists only believe in themselves, the only thing that offends them attacking them physically.

Because it is a historic writing with some good in it- even if man-made. Reading a book never hurt anyone.
Also, I recommend people know the book that causes so many people to do so many stupid things.

Most atheists don't boycott things because there is nothing wrong with looking at other perspectives.

I admire Einstein, he found the answers to existence. I did too. Yet, his answers were much more complex than mine. He lost his life, because when you learn the truth, you simply die.

Why am I alive? I don't know. I should be dead. In a way, I am.
