In terms of energy:

The 9mm develops around 300 foot pounds at the muzzle, and the 7mm Mag develops around 3200 foot pounds at the muzzle...that is 10 times more powerful than the 9mm. However when it is up close and personal, a 9mm would be the better choice for a self defense situation due to it's rapid firepower and superior close in handling. Both would do severe hearing damage in confined quarters, but the 9mm at 30,000 PSI would be less severe than the 7mm Mag's 60,000 PSI. The largest commonly loaded bulled in the 9mm is 147 grains fired at around 950fps, while the largest commonly loaded bullet in the 7mm is 175 grains fired at around 2800fps. The two cartridges are designed for completely different purposes. The 7mm is a big game cartridge designed to take large animals such as mule deer and elk, while the 9mm is designed as a close up self defense cartridge. Bigger is not always better.

a 9mm is a bigger diameter bullet, but a 7mm mag is a much longer bullet, and a much more powerful round. A 9mm is a handgun round, whereas a 7mm mag is a long-range rifle round. You really can't compare the two, they are used for 2 different purposes. A 9mm has an effective range of 50-60 yards, and a 7mm mag has an effective range of 500-600 yards. You're comparing apples and oranges here.

Of course 9mm is larger than 7mm, the bore diameter of the two firearms. But a 7mm Remington Magnum has about 3200 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, vs. about 350 ft-lbs for the 9mm pistol cartridge. Based on muzzle energy, the 7 Mag is almost ten times as powerful as a 9mm. It also has a much longer effective range-roughly speaking: a few hundred yards for the 7mm versus a few dozen yards for the 9mm fired in a pistol. A 9mm carbine or submachine gun will have a little longer effective range.

Depends what sort of 9mm and 7mm you mean and what you mean by bigger. The 9mm will always have a 'wider' bullet.

However 7mm rifle cartrdiges will be many times larger than a 9mm pistol case.

And a 7mm rifle bullet while skinnier is longer than a pistol bullet, and may generally weight more anyway than a 9mm.

And then there are 9mm rifle cartridges as well, usually old or rare versions such as the 9 x 57 etc.

7mm Mag is a rifle cartridge and is many times more powerful than a 9mm Parabellum cartridge which is designed for handguns. However, 9mm fires a larger projectile, loses on velocity though. The 7mm has more powder behind it so it gets more range and velocity.

7mm is for long range hunting rifles, 9mm is for handguns.... neither could perform the job of the other.

You're a bit confused aren't you?
The 9mm is a pistol cartridge.
The 7mm Magnum is a rifle cartridge.
Apples and oranges.
The numbers represent the diameter of the bullet.
9mm = about .36", 7mm. = about .28"
That is only a small part of the story.
a 9mm throws a 112 gr. bullet at about 1200 FPS.
a 7mm. Magnum throws a 150 gr. bullet at about 3000 FPS.
Which is "bigger"?

9mm is larger than 7mm, obviously, but that isn't all there is to it. The 7mm Remington Magnum cartridge, for instance, can launch a 160 grain bullet at over 2900 fps, and that long bullet will penetrate medium game to a great distance. A 9mm Parabellum pistol, on the other hand, typically shoots a 115 grain bullet at about 1200 fps and isn't suitable for medium game. 9mm rifle cartridges, available after WW I, have fallen out of favor and are hardly to be seen these days, where the 9.3mm's continue to be popular in Europe and Africa, though less so in the US. About as close as you get in the US is the 35 Whelen, and for comparison's sake, the Whelen would typically shoot a 225 grain bullet at about 2450 fps, about twice the weight at about twice the speed of the pistol bullet.

7 mm Magnum hands down.* The 9mm is a pistol cartridge.* The 7mm Magnum is a rifle cartridge.* Big, big difference.* The 9mm cannot be compared or compete with the 7mm Magnum in any manner, shape or form.*

It depends on what you mean by "bigger". If you are talking size then obviously the 9mm. If are talking about power give more info; but i will assume you are talking about the 9mm x 19 then the 7mm has more power.

9 is a bigger number than seven, so the 9mm is bigger in DIAMETER, but the 7mm is longer for some reason.
